The Dream: Are you looking for a house in an area where prices are still reasonable and foreign tourism is still in its early stages? Do you dream of owning a home where the weather is always mild, near beautiful uncrowded beaches? Where blossom on the almond and peach trees colour the countryside white and pink in the spring? Do you enjoy relaxing but also want somewhere that has a lot happening when you feel like going out 'on the town'? Would you value the hospitality of locals whose roots date back to Roman and Greek times? Do you like to explore historic villages? Do you enjoy superb locally produced fresh food and wine and want to experience the Italian 'dolce vita'? Do you need easy access from major European airports?
The Reality: Puglia is a 'regione' full of character, traditions and locals who are extremely hospitable and can help provide you with anything you need. And more.
The location. Puglia is in the south east of Italy - on the 'heel' . It is opposite Albania, ex-Yugoslavia and Greece. There are daily ferries to these countries from Bari and Brindisi. The airports in Bari and Brindisi have daily connections to many European destinations. Puglia is famous for its whitewashed houses dotting the countryside that comprises mainly olive groves and vineyards. Several types of property exist - town houses and flats, 'masserie' which are traditional country houses, villas and 'trulli'. The Trulli are typical traditional buildings with conical roofs, unique to this area, that have been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. The sea is extremely clear with both sandy and rocky beaches.
The weather is pleasant throughout the year. The average winter temperatures are as high as 10°C (50°F) in the summer the temperatures are also very pleasant and not too hot thanks to a fresh sea breeze, averaging around 28°C in the summer (80°F).
Enjoy the Italian "Gioia di vivere" The weather and the welcoming nature of the outgoing and friendly 'pugliesi' make a stay in this area a particularly pleasant experience for foreigners. Fruit, fish and food in general are the freshest one can find in Europe. Puglia produces a range of both white and red wines whose excellence is fruit of the variety of grapes and the favourable climate. Due to its abundance prices are very reasonable and you can buy directly from the producers. It is almost famous for its olive oil and olive groves dominate much of the landscape. The uncrowded beaches are sandy or rocky and the sea a splendid bluey green colour. It is ideal walking and cycling country as it is generally quite flat and there are hundreds of villages to visit with their imposing churches and monuments. The pugliesi restaurants and trattorie are special for their varied menus with many dishes dating back hundreds of years. Properties offer good value for money and are lower than in more well known tourist destinations in Italy.
